ROK Radio is a revolution in mobile entertainment. ROK Radio = iPod + iTunes + Radio + Mobile. Using the ROK Player™ media software, ROK Radio provides consumers with the ultimate 'all in one' radio experience.

The key differentiators are that it works on mobile all of the time and has a subscription payment option, station by station, providing a new revenue stream for broadcasters. Users can download music from mobile to mobile: hear a track you want and download it from the play list menu for a per track payment.

ROK Radio uses normal phone functionality, the Radio automatically pauses on call or message received. ROK Radio also enables station hopping. Available stations can be selected from the handset.

ROK Radio is the ultimate enhancement to the mobile entertainment market – Music Anywhere, Anytime!

How it works

  • Software embedded on the mobile phone, multi-media cards (MMC’s) or downloaded “Over The Air”.
  • Streamed over the internet, the mobile phone connects to ROK servers to broadcast ‘live’.
  • The signal streamed to the handset contains obfuscation coding, which scrambles the signal, preventing free listening & locks the software to the MMC and associated ROK Player™ software. This allows Radio stations to be paid for on a subscription basis, providing essential new revenue streams for broadcasters.
  • New ROK City is the 'social media' destination on your mobile and PC to date. Sites can be created quickly, straight from the web and WAP, using all of the audio, video, picture content and information a person has.

Virtual communities are places on the web that people can come together to chat, make friends and share information. With New ROK City, users can interact with the community from their mobile handset or the web. Even users with no technical skill can create and run their own WAP and web pages. Users can also manage their handset directly from the city and send SMS messages. They also receive a dedicated email address and can upload their own content and publish it through the web and WAP tools.

New ROK City functions fully on the WAP site so that users can receive a complete experience without having a PC. It lets any user upload their own content, which can be varied – audio, video or information. NRC then formats this to make it available for both web and mobile. The content is remotely stored and can be 'shared' amongst friends.

NRC is a unique proposition. The service contains many individual functions and services and when collectively brought together is the best method for maintaining and enhancing large scale communities.

    Market

The global market for mobile devices went through 3 billion devices in the third quarter of calendar year 2007 and is expected to pass 4 billion devices before the end of calendar year 2010. They believe that the engines for growth are not the developed world - the last 1 billion mobile device owners have come primarily from Eastern Europe, China, South and Central America, North America and India. They, along with most industry analysts, expect that the next billion will mainly come from the Far East, particularly China and India. China and India are achieving net subscriber additions at the rate of in excess of 6 million a month each. They intend to concentrate their distribution to these growth markets, which they believe are best exploited by their current technology. Their short term strategy is to quickly establish as much market presence as they can, followed by heavy cross selling of products and services to make them "sticky" with consumers and their local marketing partners in each of the territories.

In emerging markets, because the mobile device is expected to leapfrog traditional infrastructures such as telephone land lines, cable TV and Internet access, they can provide an interactive, multimedia platform to target demographics with messages to address socio-economic and humanitarian issues. They are mindful that the 3.3 billion mobile screens on Earth exceed, by a huge margin, the number of televisions, computers and cinema seats combined.

With respect to their mobile TV offerings, Nokia is offering both versions of their mobile TV on its handsets. ROK TV is being pre-loaded onto the E and N series of handsets sold by Nokia in Europe and FreeBe TV on all suitable handsets in the United States. Their TV division is a complete distribution division, divided into ROK TV and FreeBe TV. They expect this division to be a major contributor to revenues and earnings in the medium to long term future.

Content acquisition and ownership are an integral part of their "ROK TV" experience. They believe that these are likely to be the main long term competitive advantages that they enjoy in the market. Therefore, they cannot ignore the upstream content elements, and content acquisition is a high profile function in their company. As part of this, they hold partial ownership in Rok Motion Limited, a UK film production company that makes unique content suitable for the Internet and mobile distribution, have acquired Fun Little Movies Inc., a U.S. company that creates and also owns a growing catalog of short films, and are negotiating acquisition terms with other similar producers with the intention of expanding the catalog portfolio. Ultimately, they expect that these content sourcing functions will become a significant contributor to future revenues and earnings.

Earlier in 2007, they also acquired control of Blubox Software Limited which is now actively selling their Blubox software solution.

China is represented as a separate business unit within their company, mainly because of the ownership structure (a minority ownership by an affiliate of the Beijing Municipal Government). Beijing New Net Science & Technology Development Limited has strong ties with the Beijing Welfare Lottery (the larger of just two lotteries in China and the only legal form of gambling) and now sells Beijing Welfare Lottery's lottery tickets online and has reached agreement to create and run games for sale online and via mobile phone.

They have also entered into an agreement with a handset manufacturer and are now selling ODM handsets to retailers and carriers. ODM handsets are those that are not branded by major handset manufacturers and can therefore carry other powerful marketing brands. They intend to add value by embedding content and services onto these handsets so that the end user consumer can access their products/services. To carriers, the value of doing this is seen in increased average revenue per user (ARPU is an industry metric of consumer spend) and reduced churn (the number of subscribers leaving a carrier's service each month).

They currently have corporate operations in the United Kingdom, the Peoples Republic of China, the United States and South Africa which are all active, and joint ventures in Russia, Brazil and Pakistan which are all anticipated to generate revenues by March 31, 2009.

The global mass market in mobile entertainment is, and they expect will remain for some years to come, in the 2.5G field where they believe competition to ROK TV in particular is relatively weak. Their service allows consumers to receive 3G standard TV over a 2.5G connection. They can, of course, operate in 3G centric markets (which are mostly developed countries), and their ROK TV technology offers advantages to both consumer experience and carrier bandwidth use with 3G, but these markets are more competitive because their technological advantage is less clear-cut, making them technically easier for competitors to operate in and therefore have lower barriers to entry.

They fully expect that this market reality will remain into 2012 and beyond and they also note that the expected future growth in handset numbers from 3 billion to 4 billion is expected to be concentrated in China and the Indian sub-continent, where they are concentrating their immediate deployments.

    Management

    Jonathan Kendrick
Chairman, Group CEO & founder of ROK

A highly successful serial entrepreneur, Jonathan began his career with Goodyear Racing before securing, for himself, the European rights for the then unknown brand of Yokohama Tyres. Jonathan developed the Yokohama brand through shrewd sponsorship of the young Ayrton Senna and Eddie Jordan before selling the European division of Yokohama back to the Japanese parent group.

Jonathan then ran Lighter than Air, a highly innovative aerial advertising company, with his brother Michael, which eventually merged into Virgin Airship and Balloon Company with Sir Richard Branson. It was through a client of VABC's - Orange - that Jonathan began to understand the massive future potential of mobile entertainment and, as a result, he formed ROK.

ROK was created, originally, to simplify the logistical problems associated with pre-pay vouchers through the creation of electronic vouchers and ROK's first major customer was BT Cellnet. Jonathan sold the company to a major industry player in 2002 and successfully negotiated to retain the ROK brand.

The new ROK Group, formed in 2002, has subsequently grown to become a world-leader in the development of innovative technologies for mobile video streaming and the development of white-label mobile entertainment services to Network Operators worldwide.
